Departure Process Steps

Step 1: CONTACT IOM

We can imagine that it is a big decision to leave the Netherlands. Contact us at 088 746 4466, or e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to make an appointment with one of our counsellors. We will schedule a meeting with a counsellor closest to your location. With our counsellor, you can discuss all questions or concerns you may have relating to your return. Everything that is discussed will be treated confidentially. If there are problems that make it difficult for you to decide about your return, for example, your medical condition, we can explore the options to overcome any obstacles.

Step 2: MAKE YOUR DECISION

If you decide to go back to your country of origin you will be asked to sign an application for voluntary return with IOM. By signing this form you give IOM permission to share your personal data with the immigration authorities in the Netherlands. This exchange is necessary to obtain the approval of the Dutch authorities for your departure from the Netherlands.

Step 3: PREPARE

Once your application for voluntary return is approved, IOM will start the arrangements for your departure, in close coordination with you.

Step 4: YOUR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Where possible, we can inform you on how to obtain a temporary travel document from the representation of your country of citizenship or destination. If needed, IOM can also assist you during the application procedures. Please remember that you remain responsible for the application including proving your nationality and identity.
We can cover your public transport expenses to your embassy or consulate and will reimburse you the costs of obtaining your travel document.

You can find the address and contact information of embassies and consulates accredited to the Netherlands on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

More information on the conditions for obtaining a temporary travel document can also be found on the website of the respective embassy or consulate.

Step 5: YOUR AIR TICKET

When all arrangements have been made and you are ready to go, IOM will book your ticket and inform you about the flight details.

Step 6: YOUR DEPARTURE

Finally, IOM will arrange your transportation to Schiphol Airport where you need to report at the IOM desk 3 hours before your departure. This time is needed to ensure smooth processing at the airport from check-in to your departure.

The IOM desk is situated in Departures Hall 3 between entrances B and C. Our airport staff can easily be recognized. You will be asked to sign a final form declaring you agree to leave the Netherlands and - depending on your situation - your consent to end all legal procedures for a residence permit or the withdrawal of your current residence permit. IOM will then assist you with check-in and boarding procedures and exit formalities at the border. If necessary, you can receive social or medical assistance during the flight and upon arrival. Special transportation and escorts can be arranged. IOM will accompany you to your gate and give you your ticket and your financial allowance if you receive any. In case that we are in possession of your (travel) documents, you will receive them at the gate before boarding. From there you will continue your journey like any regular passenger.

Step 7: BUILD UP A NEW LIFE

The assistance you receive upon return from our office in your home country depends on your personal situation and will be explained to you by your counsellor in the Netherlands. IOM can arrange arrival assistance, in-kind reintegration assistance, and medical support. You can read more about reintegration assistance here.
